Hong Kong resident BNO applications

New BNO visa route allowing up to 5.4 million Hongkongers to settle in the UK

Hong Kong citizens looking to relocate to the UK under the new BNO visa

The UK government has opened a new immigration route that will, in principle, allow an estimated 5.4 million Hong Kong residents to move to the UK and become British Citizens.

Background behind the new BNO scheme

As of May 2021, more than 34,000 applications have been received by the UK Home Office from Hong Kong citizens looking to relocate to the UK to start a new life.

When the UK handed back Hong Kong to China in 1997, people in Hong Kong could apply for British nationality through a British National Overseas (BNO) visa. This British nationality was only available to the BNO visa holder and it could not be passed down to further generations.

However, the UK government has confirmed that since 31 January 2021, BNO citizens including their close family members are now able to apply to settle in the UK to live and work to become British citizens after 1 year and after 5 years, apply for indefinite leave to remain in the UK.
